Lee Karuri, a key political player in the election of Mwai Kibaki as president in 2002 as well as the re-election of President Uhuru Kenyatta in 2017 has joined Raila Odinga’s camp and is expected to play a critical role in helping consolidate the Mt Kenya region behind the ODM leader.
Using his lobby, the Ushindi Kenya Network, Mr. Karuri has joined hands with a host of Jubilee MPs from the Mt Kenya region and will kickstart a series of activities in the region from next week, in a bid of solidifying Raila Odinga’s grip and his candidature next year.
According to reports, the Ushindi Network has been holding weekly consultation meetings with twenty-five Mt Kenya legislators in Nairobi, to map out the vote-rich region and craft effective strategies which will not only resonate with the resident’s needs but also ensure Odinga, who is President Uhuru’s pick, becomes the fifth Head of State next year.
”We have a common agenda with them (Ushindi Kenya Network) in that we are all supporting Raila’s candidature, although we are driven in this by different interests. So we agreed on consolidating our activities to boost our campaign,” Nyeri Town MP Ngunjiri Wambugu says.
The Ushindi Kenya Network and the twenty-five MPs have since been caucused under the larger Mt Kenya Focus Group and are reaching out to the well-oiled Mt Kenya Foundation, for a seamless working relationship as they strive to push Raila Odinga’s agenda in the region.
Other prominent names that have joined Mr. Karuri are James Anthony Kariuki Nginyo, a son of the late prominent businessman Nginyo Kariuki, who was a close ally of the ODM leader, business magnates Caroline Ndung’u and Gerald Githinji.
