The Deputy President has hit a dead end on his pursuit of having outgoing Kakamega governor Wycliffe Oparanya ditch ODM for the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), and later be part of the broader United Democratic Alliance (UDA), in 2022.

This revelation comes after months of William Ruto personally going after the deputy ODM leader in his attempts to destabalise the orange party in the Western region.

In the scheme, Dr. Ruto asked Governor Oparanya to lead the PDP Party and use it to field candidates in Western Kenya under the UDA umbrella. Another option was, the former CoG Chair running for the presidency on a PDP ticket to split ODM votes in the region, and most specifically Kakamega county, one of the ODM bedrocks.

DP Ruto’s think tank argument has been since Musalia Mudavadi’s Amani National Congress (ANC) is dominant in Vihiga, Moses Wetangula’s Ford-Kenya in Bungoma, and Transzoia counties, People’s Democratic Party (PDP) under Dr. Oparanya would control Kakamega. Effectively crippling Raila Odinga’s ODM’s strength across the four counties of Western.

Over the weekend, deputy president allies in UDA led by Didmus Barasa and Speaker Kenneth Lusaka met Senator Moses Wetangula in Nakuru, a meeting also attended by Kiminini MP Chris Wamalwa.

Reports indicate the DP has offered Senator Wetangula’s the Speaker of the Senate’s position in 2022, and also Ford Kenya fielding candidates in UDA strongholds across the country.

On Sunday, Kakamega Governor who seemed to address the DP told members of the press he had no business forming a village party and use it to run for presidency in 2022.

”People telling me to form my own party. I don’t want a village outfit. I am in a national party. If I form my own party I will only win seats in Kakamega and not win the presidency,” the ODM deputy leader said.
