Kenya Friday joins the world in celebrating the World Radio Day, with Media Council of Kenya(MCK) in partnership with Communication Authority (CA) and the National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC) kicking off its celebration in Nakuru.
This year’s theme is “Innovating Radio to promote peaceful coexistence”, which underscores the mandate of NCIC.
Speaking in Nakuru during the celebration, Media Council Programmes Manager Victor Bwire urged Kenyan journalists to use radio to practice solution-based journalism touching on issues to do with national reconciliation and development.
” “Identify your audiences and come up with unique programs that will reflect on the needs of your audience. The drop in radio listenership is due to the fact that most radios are copying each other. Lack of innovation and originality.” Said Bwire

On his part, Communications Authority Assistant Director Peter Ikumilu said radio is one of the most popular mediums of exchange of information and education to people worldwide.
He observed that despite historical legal and regulatory gaps, the broadcast media in Kenya has over the years cut its teeth as one of the boldest, and most vibrant in the region and the continent at large.
“The main challenge of digital radio is the receiver device. the CA is doing a study on the pros and cons of digital technology.” Noted Ikumilu
“We need to discuss what other countries have and borrow from current trends like having HD radios.” Added Ikumilu
The World Radio Day celebrates radio as part of humanity’s history by following the various developments in the society and adapting its services.
On the occasion of World Radio Day 2021 (WRD 2021), UNESCO is calling on radio stations to celebrate this event’s 10th anniversary and the more than 110 years of radio.
This edition of WRD is divided into three main sub-themes:
- EVOLUTION. The world changes, radio evolves.
This sub-theme refers to the resilience of the radio, to its sustainability ;
- INNOVATION. The world changes, radio adapts and innovate.
Radio has had to adapt to new technologies to remain the go-to medium of mobility, accessible everywhere and to everyone;
- CONNECTION. The world changes, radio connects.
This sub-theme highlights radio’s services to our society—natural disasters, socio-economic crises, epidemics, etc.
